We recently moved, so I have a chance for a fresh start in a new to me 3 car garage! Read more to see the initial setup of the new garage where we install Menards Xtreme Modular Shelving units and load them up!
I have recently become another victim of the 3 car garage fallacy. We moved to a new house with a ‘bigger’ 3 car garage, turns out that I realized very quickly that my 2 car garage was much deeper and had more room on the sides to actually store stuff. I also didn’t used to have a riding mower which takes up a large part of the 3rd bay. Because of this fact, I need to get more organized to fit all my stuff!
I really wanted to set up the garage correctly. 2×4 and 4×4 scrap wood shelves are fine, but I’m not doing it halfway this time.
I checked out some shelving units at various places, the top choices were theΒ Husky shelves and the Edsal shelves. Eventually I ended up at Menards and found their Xtreme line of garage shelving. I liked that it was modular and that I could buy and add on pieces instead of just having to buy entire kits.
Since the ceilings of the new garage are WAY taller than the old garage, I started out with one section of 8′ tall by 6′ wide by 17″ deep shelving and four shelves. I couldn’t decide between the wood or metal wire shelf material so I got half and half. Again, they are modular so they can be mix and matched.
After having the first shelf up for a couple of days, it was already full. So off I went to Menards again and bought one more upright with two 8′ long shelves.
The shelving unit is screwed to studs in the wall in 6 different places. There is a concrete footing that made me space the shelving from the wall by about 3″ so I stacked two 2×4’s screwed to the wall then used a lag bolt and washer to attach the shelving unit to the 2×4’s.
No there aren’t files in that filing cabinet… It is a part of my DIY Super Cheap Tool Storage Solution!
And some more recent pictures. I put an led tube light above the workbench and it has become my ‘stuff to fix’ pile location.
That is all for now. I am SUPER excited that we have an electrician coming by next week to install outlets for my welder and compressor. Now I can get back to actually welding on things!! I will be sure to take some before and after pics.
Now YOU, go outside and work on something. This is what it’s all about:
